Situated on a hill with views of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains, this 3,480 square-foot home was designed for a vibrant family of four. The abundance of natural light and gardens woven throughout provide a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of city life. A minimalist palette of finishes celebrates tone and texture and encourages one to enjoy the views and lush landscape. Yellow cedar screens milled in Dowbuilt's Shop cover floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. Custom concrete walls throughout feature a unique appearance and texture from partially sanded plywood panels. The upper bedroom spaces nestle into the tree canopies above and enjoy a living roof deck.
In 2020, Courtyard House was honored with a national housing award from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) in the one and two-family custom residences category. The project received additional recognition the following year with a citation award in the 2021 AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Design Awards.
This home appears to capture and hold the cool light of the Pacific Northwest. The vegetation plays a significant role in the material palette, and the understated concrete and wood slide past each other creating a setting that appears quiet without being austere.
